What causes meralgia paresthetica, and how is it typically treated?
Meralgia paresthetica is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, a sensory nerve that supplies the outer thigh. This pressure can result from tight clothing, obesity, pregnancy, scar tissue, or prolonged standing or walking. People with meralgia paresthetica often experience burning pain, tingling, numbness, or electric-shock sensations along the outer thigh, while muscle strength remains normal because the affected nerve controls sensation, not movement.
